| Arguably, the birthplace of modern astronomy and astrophysics, Mt. Wilson was founded in 1904 by George Ellery Hale. The 100 inch telescope at right was the largest in the world during the first quarter of the 20th century. Einstein, Hubble, Barnard ...........................they were all here. | ||||||||||
| In the summer of 2003, nearly the centennial of this remarkable place, I had the opportunity to participate in a unique educational program sponsored annually by the Mount Wilson Observatory Association. This was a 2-week intensive astronomy mini-camp, under the tutelage of professional astronomers. The program is called CUREA. | Mt. Wilson is far from a dormant obsolete facility. Active research in astrophysics and solar physics continues. To the left and below are the 2 operating solar towers. The background image on this page was taken by Norm Vargas who is one of the telescope operators for the 60 inch telescope. For more on Mt. Wilson today click here | |||||||||
