Galaxies and Supernovae
IIn the summer of 2005, I had the opportunity to image this supernova in M51! I had taken a previous image the year before, so I actually had a before and after record. It then becomes quite obvious where the 'new star' is. The negative image created in Photoshop Elements makes it even easier to see. In AIP4WIN you can estimate a 'raw instrumental magnitude' using comparative known magnitudes from other stars in the image. That came out to be 13.9 which was in the ballpark of reported magnitudes for that day. OK, fine...I understand that it means nothing without the proper calibration, filters, etc., but it's still fun to do! The supernova was discovered only 5 days earlier.
